Collection Resources Online
- Currently available: Over 1.3 million eBooks, eJournals, eVideos, eMusic, articles, databases and more are immediately findable and accessible through Encompass and Databases A-Z. In Encompass, you can narrow search results to “e” resources, by using the Format filters on the search results screen (examples).
- Resources with COVID-19 temporary access have been removed; one exception - all JSTOR archival journals are fully open until Dec. 31st.
- Streaming videos: Through Alexander Street, the library provides unlimited subscription access to over 69,000 videos across most of our disciplines. Content types range widely and include instructional videos, fiction, documentaries, news and event recordings, and more. Search by subject, publisher, person, content type, language, and more. Streaming access to videos on other platforms is purchased for a limited term on a title-by-title basis. Submit requests here and include course number.
- Textbooks: As a general policy the library does not purchase textbooks, however we have acquired some as part of ebook package purchases. These are cataloged and findable in Encompass along with catalogued Open Access textbooks. This subject guide provides sources for Open Educational Resources.
- Linking to library resources from within Canvas: View this short video for guidance. As always, when using online library resources in your course, it is best to link to the document or resource rather than downloading. This assures compliance with license terms and communicates use of these resources to the library’s collection development team. The pandemic has necessitated that we adapt our procedures regarding placing materials on reserve. Based on studies, it is recommended that physical items be quarantined for 72 hours to reduce possible transmission of the virus. This severely limits the effectiveness of physical reserves. Physical materials reserved for use in-library will not be available. Whenever possible, we will provide scanned or digital copies of course reserves.
Feature & Drama Film Reserves Practices
In the spring semester, library staff, in line with many other institutions of higher education, relied heavily on fair use for e-reserves during the online-only teaching portion of the term. With few if any exceptions, we converted DVDs in their entirety to stream within Canvas. This has been the case for feature films as well as for documentaries. We did this as an emergency measure; we were rushed, not having the time to explore our options.
For the fall semester we will return to standard practices. We request 5 to 7 days advance notice to allow staff time to provide you with streaming access that meets legal requirements. This involves:
- Transcoding and loading documentaries in their entirety (per the TEACH Act, per our College attorney) and/or exploring other means of access; or
- Exploring and purchasing streaming options for feature/dramatic films (or transcoding up to 25 percent without permission, per the TEACH Act, per our College attorney) or exploring other means of access.

Funds are available to purchase new online resources for courses taught this academic year. Requests should be submitted directly to your library liaison as soon as possible as it can take more time to research and set up access for online resources. Purchase requests should include the course number and be emailed directly to library liaisons or submitted through the online Suggest a Purchase form. All long-term purchase requests may be submitted to your faculty liaison. General information is available on the Collection Development web page.
Access to Trexler Library’s print and audiovisual resources is available. For enhanced safety and convenience, we will be utilizing contactless checkout and pickup. Submit a request by using the “Place Hold” button (instructions) in the Encompass record. You will receive an email with further instructions addressing both on-campus and off-campus options.
Beginning August 24th we are filling all interlibrary loan requests (books and articles). As some libraries are still not loaning books it may take more time to receive book requests or we may be unable to receive a book request.
If you have an Interlibrary loan book coming due, please email email@example.com to request renewal or return it using the library Book Drop. If you are not on campus you can email to request a postage-paid return UPS label. You can then package the book(s) in a padded envelope or box and drop off at your local UPS pick up.
The library has many online resources accessible through the library website.
Trexler Library’s librarians will continue to be available for student reference and research consultations by email, phone, and Zoom. Please encourage your students to reach out for assistance with their projects. Contact information and guides to resources can be found on the .
Questions about materials borrowed from the library should be directed to firstname.lastname@example.org or 484-664-3500. Please note: Interlibrary Loan (ILL) due dates are different. If you currently have an Interlibrary Loan book you should check the due date on the book strap or in your library account (My Account); you must initiate an ILL renewal. Send an email request to email@example.com.
Trexler Library’s print resources may be checked out by students. Submit a request by using the “Place Hold” button (example) in the Encompass record. Log in using your network login name and password. When the item is ready, you will receive an email. The email will include instructions for on-campus pick up and options for delivery if you are not on campus in fall.

As some libraries are still not loaning books it may take more time to receive book requests or we may be unable to receive a book request. We will mail interlibrary loan materials to students taking classes remotely; please add your address to the “Notes” field of the request form. For renewal requests and for a return UPS label please send an email request to firstname.lastname@example.org.
